Austin Musician Gets Worldwide Exposure Through Viral Marketing

Austin industrial/rock artist DAX is using unusual viral marketing techniques to market his music around the world.

"I came up with a pretty cool way to get my music out there," says the solo-artist/singer. "I made up a bunch of CD singles for my song Submission, and then got my fans and friends to pass them out to people who might like it. On the CD itself and at www.DAX.org I am thanking anyone who passes them out - so each time we give someone CD's to pass out we add their name to the 'thank-you' list. It's totally snowballed."

DAX began this unique promotion 6 months ago and has since given out over 10,000 free singles to fans around the world. "Yes it's costing me a little money," says Dax, "but it's a lot less expensive than advertising - and also, a lot of people who get the single are buying the longer EP, so that is offsetting a lot of the costs."

DAX came up with the idea as an answer to the recording industry's fear of music trading. "I looked at how MP3's get sent around," says the singer, "and I realized that for a new artist giving away music was a way to sell more CD's as opposed to something that would take away sales. And if you make it easy and fun for people to help out, they are happy to…it has totally taken off!"

DAX is offering free disks on the Web here.
